Math 1040 - Intro to Statistics
The term project for Math 1040 was a group project that used methods we had studied in class. We were asked to choose a research question that involved two quantitative variables, design a data collection method and analyze the results using histograms and linear regression. I feel that having a project of this magnitude put the methods of statistics into a better perspective for me.
Since this was a group project, each member of the group developed a research question of their own and then the group chose one research question from that pool. Our group chose the question: "Does the age of an infant/toddler correlate to the number of diapers used per day?" Our method of collection involved surveying people on a college campus during various times of the day and also during different days of the week. The data collection method had to be designed so that the population being surveyed was randomized. After the data was collected, it was arranged in a data table and analyzed using statistical calculations, histograms and boxplots.
During the course of the project, I developed a better understanding for the methods used in statistics. I have now personally witnessed some of the challenges that can arise during the data collection process. Some of the parents surveyed during our study were willing to participate and give information pertinent to the study, but there were also some parents that were uncomfortable participating since the study involved giving some personal data. I believe this is an issue that may arise during most survey-type statistical studies. I also feel that analyzing the data collected helped to solidify my understanding of the calculations involved and the design and purpose of the histograms and boxplots. This project did take some planning and was a great deal of work but I now appreciate the effort that is placed into statistics.
