Physics 1040 - Elementary Astronomy

The Astronomy 1040 course presented many concepts that tied into other courses I have taken. Since I have a biology and chemistry background I was able to pull from that information to understand the concepts regarding the formation of the universe, galaxies, stars and planets. New astronomical discoveries continue to support and challenge our current understanding of physics and this course was a great introduction to some of my fundamental understandings of the laws of physics.
The assignment for the ePortfolio was to hold an astronomy-based conversation with peers or family and to write about the experience. I have always enjoyed listening to information that other people can provide mostly because it shows the differences in people’s beliefs and backgrounds. This assignment, and this course, had an impact on my view of the world because it made me realize how much there is we still don’t know about the universe. There are so many possible scenarios to explain the existence of far away galaxies, quasars, black holes, etc. (most of those are based on our understanding of physics) but there are also many things we can’t explain. And, there are many things we may never know.
This assignment showed me how much I did learn in this course. If I had attempted to join an astronomy-based conversation before this course, I would have been more of a passive listener rather than adding to the conversation. I feel that I have learned the basics of astronomy quite well and I hope to learn more in the future. Prior to this class I was reluctant to read astronomy news articles or magazines because I was unfamiliar with the terminology. I now feel that I can read and understand these materials and continue to learn as the field grows.
